Reuters: Cannes critics left cold at Da Vinci Code screening

Journalists gave eagerly awaited film "The Da Vinci Code" a cool reception at its first press screening on Tuesday, a day ahead of the world premiere of the adaptation of Dan Brown's controversial novel.

One of the central characters suggests Jesus Christ married Mary Magdalene and they established a dynasty which elements within the Church would stop at nothing to try to cover up.

Earlier on Tuesday Da Vinci Code stars including Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou, and the normally publicity-shy Brown, were greeted by hundreds of fans and journalists when they arrived in Cannes on a train decorated with a giant Mona Lisa.

Da Vinci Code Misses the Mark for Critics

CANNES, France - "The Da Vinci Code" drew lukewarm praise, shrugs of indifference, some jeering laughter and a few derisive jabs Tuesday from arguably the world's toughest movie crowd: critics at the Cannes Film Festival.

"It's a movie about whether the greatest story ever told is true or not, and it's not the greatest movie ever screened, is it?" said Baz Bamigboye, a film columnist for London's Daily Mail. "As a thriller, well," he continued, shrugging.

Philip Booth take on Da Vinci Code: Like Dullsville, Man

Philip Booth caught tonight's advance screening of The Da Vinci Code, Ron Howard's adaptation of the can't-escape-it Dan Brown novel. The nickel review: he was underwhelmed, and the zero-friction chemistry between stars Tom Hanks (mildly miscast) and Audrey Tatou didn't help.
